How do I get started?

If you know your employer will be laying off personnel or you have already lost your job, there are things you can do to begin the process of finding stability and your next job. Consider the following:

  • Use the checklist below to create a plan of action and timeline.
  • Develop a job search strategy by setting weekly goals.
  • Apply for benefits and services that can begin to supplement your salary immediately such as UI benefits, SNAP or TANF.
  • Look into options available for personal circumstances such as continuing education or training, veteran services, disability resources or servicios de habla hispana.
  • Stay focused and use your time to explore job interest, research various companies, network and apply for available jobs.

 

 

LEAD Checklist

  • Familiarize yourself with the resources available through the agencies within the S.C. LEAD site so you have a plan of action and know where to concentrate your efforts.
  • Update your resume.
  • Speak to your supervisor and get a written reference if possible.
  • Meet with your company’s benefits and health plan administrator to find out about your retirement pension and health insurance.
  • Set up a personal email account if you do not have one. This is a critical tool for benefits, networking, sending resumes and corresponding with potential employers. Free email accounts are available from many websites, including www.gmail.com, www.mail.com, and www.live.com.
  • Review your financial obligations and create a budget. Consider using foundations and associations that offer free financial counseling services.
  • Participate in job fairs held in your community by visiting: https://dew.sc.gov/individuals/find-a-job/job-fairs
