There are many health insurance options available to you. Where you should start looking depends upon whether your employer will continue its health insurance plan. If your employer does not continue your health insurance plan, and you are in need of medical care, you may find medical assistance with the Healthy Connections Medicaid program that is administered by the S.C. Department of Health and Human Services. Healthy Connections helps pay for some or all medical bills for certain individuals who cannot afford medical care. Healthy Connections will take certain criteria into account when determining eligibility. If you or someone in your family needs health care, you should apply for Medicaid even if you are not sure of your eligibility. Some income and assets, like home ownership, may not count against you, depending on your situation. You are encouraged to apply if:

  • You are pregnant or think you may be pregnant
  • You are or have a child or teenager age 18 or under
  • You or your child is in foster care or adopted
  • You have been diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer
  • You are blind
  • You have a disability or disabilities
  • You need nursing home care
  • You are over the age of 65
  • You have very low or no income

To apply for Healthy Connections, you will need to complete and submit an application. Before you apply, you will need to know the following for all the people in your household:

  • Date of Birth,
  • Social Security Number,
  • Income from jobs or training,
  • Benefits received now, or in the past, such as Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), veteran’s benefits or child support,
  • Amount of money in your checking account, savings account or other resources you own,
